Effects of Geogrid Reinforcement on the Backfill of Integral Bridge Abutments

The construction of integral bridges is one the most effective methods to reduce bridges’ and in-service costs. However, there are associated geotechnical problems with their abutments backfill due integrated abutments. main goal this study evaluate quantify benefits geogrid reinforcement for reducing backfill’s problems. For purpose, using small-scale physical modeling, reinforcing an abutment bridge subjected cyclic movements evaluated. results then compared a previous performed on unreinforced two types geocells. In study, 120 loading cycles applied geogrid-reinforced soil simulate loadings seasonal displacement. horizontal reaction load at top wall, changes in pressure behind deformation measured during test. Then discussed terms equivalent peak lateral coefficient (Kpeak), earth (K*), normalized settlement wall (Sg/H). derived coefficients show that substantially reduces settlements after loads. Based results, Kpeak K* decrease by up 36%, Sg/H decreases 62%. addition, comparison geocell shows more efficient coefficients.
